The Architecture Of Memory: Paintings And Constructions

Forgetting is a precondition for symbolization, while repetition is what happens when something cannot be remembered. In this intensive five-day workshop offered by visiting artist Patricia Wheeler, you will explore a deeper level of Patricia’s philosophy and techniques for processing memory through journaling, repeating imagery and themes. Together, you will revise your feelings and desires to transform personal vision into abstract paintings using limestone clay on board with acrylic paint and cold wax. As you build, stencil and cut into the paintings, you begin to understand the layering and distressed surfaces of ancient places and how that accumulation of history and visual information can metaphorically reflect ourselves. Emphasis will be working in series. We will work on multiple paintings, one with a niche to hold a bundled object you create with gathered bits and pieces of nature, which are wrapped, stitched, glued and waxed. These bundles are something sacred, each bundle like a kernel of the whole land. You will leave the workshop with a series of works, a fresh creative perspective and a great sense of exploration.

Prerequisite: Basic design sense and a willingness to be vulnerable, facing fear holds the promise of empowerment, this class is physical and messy.
