Garment Transformation: Thrift is Poetic Because it is Creative

Details

There’s a history of thriftiness in many cultures.  In Japan, mottainai is a term conveying a sense of regret concerning waste.  The British proclaim, “Make do or do without.”  The American phrase is “Waste not, want not,” to imply if you use a commodity or resource carefully and without extravagance, you will never be in need.  This class is an exercise in creative re-use.  By restructuring thrift store men’s shirts (or family excess?) we will construct new garments that are inexpensive, modern, and fully original without proclaiming their origins. “Thrift is poetic because it is creative; waste is unpoetic because it is waste.” (G.K. Chesterton, What's Wrong with the World)
