Introduction to the Fundamentals of Drawing Botanical Subjects

Join us for an introduction to Botanical Drawing. You will spend six weeks learning and practicing basic drawing principles in graphite, with a particular focus on how they apply to drawing botanical subjects, realistically.

Week 1 – Exploring graphite, and the importance of value. (i.e. using lights and darks)

Week 2 – Using graphite to represent texture

Week 3, 4, 5 – A combination of a) Breaking plant subjects into simple geometric forms; b) learning the importance of and practicing working with the idea of a single light source; understanding linear perspective and aerial perspective.

Week 6 – The importance of direct observation, as opposed to working from photographs.
