Letterpress Broadsides: Composing with Text & Image
In this weekend workshop, students will explore combining text and images to produce a two-color broadside. Broadsides are one-sheet prints intended to be displayed as public works of art with a message. Broadsides have a long tradition in printing, and have historically played a fundamental role in educating the public and instigating social, literary, and political revolutions. Today, many printmakers use the broadside to display works of poetry, or as a powerful form of self-expression. In this workshop we will combine self-generated or found text with printed images created to enhance and express the content. Varied techniques for image creation will be demonstrated on the press, including pressure printing, linoleum block printing, and the use of alternative type high materials. Short passages of hand-set type will be composed and printed by students in combination with images to create cohesive finished pieces. Students will leave the class with an edition of 25 two-color broadsides displaying their own unique message.
