MASTER CLASS: Contemporary Painting Practices

Join artist and OCAC Drawing & Painting Department Head, Michelle Ross in this painting intensive with dedicated studio space in the OCAC Painting and Drawing studios, overlooking the coast range. Enhance your painting practice by surveying material and conceptual approaches in contemporary painting culture. Students are asked to bring in current work and encouraged to leverage feedback from the group to start new projects. The first five days will include: presentations of contemporary painting, material demonstrations and visiting artists. Group meetings in the morning will be followed in the afternoon with studio work time and individual consultation with the instructor and visiting artists. Daily prompts or conceptual challenges will be given to expand your creative lexicon. The studios will be dedicated to this course for seven days and students may work before and after the class hours during OCAC open studio hours. Saturday will be an independent work day for students without the instructor and the class will conclude on Sunday with a final critique, community potluck and planning for an exhibition in the hallway of the Drawing and Painting Department at OCAC.

Additional info:

There is no single technique focus with this course. All approaches are welcome. By sharing aspects of your current studio practice, you will be guided to consider questions and feedback from participants. Through constructive critique methods you will find the opportunity to see your work objectively and how it is operating for viewers. You may choose to re-consider your surfaces and supports, experiment with abstract systems and structures, employ digital strategies, or explore the recent resurgence of figurative and symbolic painting. This is an experience designed to invigorate and push your practice into new territory while fostering community dialogue and networking for painters.
