The Meaningful Portrait

Portraits and photography are a perfect match. Well-made portrait photographs have meaning and value that can transcend beyond the sitter to become a meaningful icon of the artist as well as a beautiful view of the subject. We will be using natural light in the OCAC studio during this 3-day workshop and you will develop skills that can be used without studios or lighting equipment. You will be working with art models, and there will be a self-portrait assignment as part of the course.  All formats are welcome as is digital or film, although Ray will be doing demonstrations using the 8x10 film camera that he uses for all his work. You will have time to work alone with the model as well as having one on one time with Ray Bidegain for guidance.  We will cover lighting, posing and gesture and most of all how to relate to your subject to get the most from the session.  Ray will be showing his platinum prints for inspiration, and reviewing the photographs that students make each day.  On the final day Mr. Bidegain will review the work made at the workshop and offer advice and suggestions to help you move forward with your work. Session One: Learn about portrait photography, view demonstration of Ray’s techniques for conceptual portraits, work with Ray to make portraits with a professional model. Session Two: Work with Ray to make portraits with two professional models. Session Three: Ray will lead a review of student work. Optional Homework: You can make portraits on your own during the week and bring them to class for review.
