Mending: Hand Stitching as Metaphor
Students will learn the fundamentals of hand embroidery within the context of mending and healing. The steady practice of hand stitching can offer the maker a chance to slow down and study the “little worlds” that exist within our shared environment. We will discus various embroidery techniques and fibers, and place them in a historical context through slides and class discussion. Emphasis will be placed on technique and process so that students can bring these skills to their own work, yet old traditions will be built upon and offered up as current avenues for contemporary issues.
Prerequisite: Comfortable threading a needle.
