Pre-College: Time Transfer: Constructing a Medieval Painting

This week will be a step into one of the most important time periods of painting: the early Northern European Renaissance. You will review influential and unique painters such as Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Brutel and Jan Van Eyck, and using historical references they will learn about the construction of space and the meaning of placement within these paintings. This workshop will spend a week working on the placement of figures in space and recreate old master works for the contemporary world. You will enjoy a day trip to the Portland Art Museum to the Renaissance wing. Technical skill and material studies will be investigated through figure drawing and interior design within painting (patterns, windows, doors), and the shift from interior paintings to exterior world. Materials used will be charcoal, pencils, acrylic, watercolor, and collage. The week will end with a trifold panel painting, where you will learn about historical context and create one of your own. All levels welcome.
