YA! Camp Session 4A: Darkroom Photo & Comics (7/9-7/13)

This camp is intended for children entering grades 6-8 in the fall. If your child will be entering grade 9 in the fall you have the option to register for a Pre-College workshop for kids entering grades 9-12.

Art Adventures YA! (Young Adult) Day Camp introduces students in grades 6-8 to OCAC’s professional art studios under the guidance of working artists and arts educators. Each weeklong session is comprised of two in-depth art workshops. This intensive exploration of two different studio techniques provides the developing teen boundless opportunity for self-expression and personal exploration. The YA! Day Camp is an ideal starting point for any youth interested in pursuing art at a more complex and rigorous level.

At the end of the week, we welcome both family and friends to come to campus at 4:00pm for our Friday Art Show, where students can show off their work and view work done by other YA! participants.

Each weeklong camp runs 9:00am-5:00pm, every day. Supervised care is available from 8am-9am (Before Care) and from 5pm-6pm (After Care). Before/After Care is offered as a package for an additional fee of $30 per session. No person under the age of 15 years may wait unsupervised on the campus of Oregon College of Art and Craft.

Darkroom Photography:

Most middle schools do not have a darkroom to explore photography. In this wonderful, busy workshop, you will get a chance to explore darkroom processes, black/white photography and image composition using your own SLR cameras, a borrowed camera from OCAC or our Holga “toy” cameras. There has been a revival in the photo industry to use Holga cameras to produce an image unlike any other method in photography. Along with the process of exploring the cameras abilities, campers also explore analog photography, and produce prints from film in our darkroom. Campers always truly love producing images from film. What a great way to explore photography! We will provide the Holga cameras, and if you have an SLR camera, please bring it.

Our popular Comics workshop has a drawing foundation with a twist: the campers all produce their own comic, which the instructor binds together into one compilation that each camper gets to take home. You will explore ideas of what you want in your comic, creating story structure, character development, the character’s environment and production of the comic strip. Techniques in basic drawing, learning how to draw with blue pencils, and then filling in with ink teach you to reproduce only the lines you want in your final comic. Built into this class are so many foundational ideas about how to make art well, and how to make art fun. This workshop is outstanding and requires a lot of attention!
