YA! Camp Session 5A: Screenprinting T-Shirts & Working with Wax (7/16-7/20)

This camp is intended for children entering grades 6-8 in the fall. If your child will be entering grade 9 in the fall you have the option to register for a Pre-College workshop for kids entering grades 9-12.

Art Adventures YA! (Young Adult) Day Camp introduces students in grades 6-8 to OCAC’s professional art studios under the guidance of working artists and arts educators. Each weeklong session is comprised of two in-depth art workshops. This intensive exploration of two different studio techniques provides the developing teen boundless opportunity for self-expression and personal exploration. The YA! Day Camp is an ideal starting point for any youth interested in pursuing art at a more complex and rigorous level.

At the end of the week, we welcome both family and friends to come to campus at 4:00pm for our Friday Art Show, where students can show off their work and view work done by other YA! participants.

Each weeklong camp runs 9:00am-5:00pm, every day. Supervised care is available from 8am-9am (Before Care) and from 5pm-6pm (After Care). Before/After Care is offered as a package for an additional fee of $30 per session. No person under the age of 15 years may wait unsupervised on the campus of Oregon College of Art and Craft.

Screen-printing + T-shirts:

You will learn to coat and expose a screen in the dark room, register your repeat, and make beautiful prints in this active workshop. Think of your favorite bands, create new logos or make ironic Ts in the surface design studio, just like the pros! You will be taken through the basics of screen-printing on both fabric and paper. Past workshops have explored ways to create a repeated pattern, interlocking into one large image, explore graphic images or experimenting with abstract designs. This workshop is very hands on, a little messy and incredibly experimental. You will make their own t-shirt design and can share images at the end of the week. If time allows, we will print on other fabrics and items.

Working with Wax:

In this amazing, hands-on workshop, you will explore the world of wax and how to create beautiful pieces of art with this ancient medium. First we learn encaustic wax techniques on wood panels.

You will learn to collage and layer with melted wax to incorporate layers of color, thin papers, pastels and dried plant. This forgiving medium allows for incredible experimentation! You will then learn the basics of batik- the art of decorating cloth using wax and dye, which has been practiced for centuries. By painting, dripping and rolling the wax onto the fabric, you create a resist by which you then dye to bring out the amazing contrasting colors. Experimentation, success, and exploration are all amazing lessons in this work. You will leave the workshop with multiple projects!
