In this course, you will build the iconic Red Blue Chair designed by Gerrit Rietveld, an architect and designer of the early 20th century and prominent member of the Dutch De Stijl movement. This course will introduce you to fundamental woodworking practices: wood properties, milling, basic joinery, and the safe use of woodworking equipment.  Through demonstration, discussion, and effort, you will investigate and learn woodworking techniques that focus on skill development and safe use of tools.  The culmination of this will be a surprisingly comfortable lounge chair – the Red Blue Chair. This class is formulated for both the beginner and advanced beginner in mind. You will purchase materials after the course begins.

Learn to build a beautiful, small wall hung cabinet that can be personalized to hold spices, tea, medicine or as a display cabinet.  This course will introduce students to basic carcass building techniques, cabinet doors and an introduction to building drawers.  Students will be provided with an instructor made design.

Prerequisite: This is an advanced course recommended for advanced beginners to intermediate students.  Students should have completed, at minimum, a foundational wood course in the recent past and know how to properly mill lumber.  Prospective students will be expected to have a familiarity with safe machine tool use.  Students will purchase lumber and hardware following the first class.

Learn how to turn small scraps of wood into delightful jewelry and accessories. Become skilled in the use of hand tools, carving, and finishing techniques. Learn about a variety of wood types, jewelry design and benefits from repurposing. Mix media and artfully combine wood with other materials to create an interesting but well-balanced piece. Come with your wildest ideas and leave with innovative fashion. All supplies included, but please bring any materials you think might fit the bill and even those that don’t!

You will walk away with a great, traditional Japanese toolbox, suited for your woodworking tools, art supplies, keepsakes, etc.  These toolboxes are simple to construct, utilizing simple joinery methods and reinforced with cut nails.  The toolbox features a locking, sliding/removable lid to house its contents.  You can later outfit the interior of their toolboxes to fit their specific needs. You will use both hand tools and limited power tools for construction of this project. This workshop is a great for those new to woodworking or for those just in need of a toolbox!  All materials will be provided.

Learn to build a bench using fine woodworking techniques!  In this course students will learn fundamental woodworking processes and joinery while building a bench from an instructor provided plan. This course will focus on the beginning wood student, concentrating on wood properties, milling, basic joinery and the safe use of tools and equipment.  Further we will discuss wood species and finishes to best suit your bench for indoor or outdoor use. This should be an exciting class and welcomes all skill levels.  Students will purchase materials after the course begins.  Due to space constraints, limit one bench per student.

Being able to properly prepare and mill lumber into flat and referenceable pieces is tantamount to creating fine woodworking projects and is the first step in every project. This one-day workshop will cover the basics of taking rough sawn lumber and turning it into straight, flat, and square pieces ready for your project.  This will include the entire process; from purchasing lumber at the lumberyard and what to look for, how to break it down using a miter saw and finally how to mill your lumber into flat and square pieces using a jointer and planer.  As always, safety will be emphasized throughout.  Practice materials will be provided.  All skill levels welcome.

Learn to chip carve intricate patterns and detailed designs into wood. Embellish all your projects with this simple skill. You will make either a set of coasters or decorative ornaments and leave with a thorough understanding of pattern carving. This workshop will explore how the technique of bent laminated wood is used to make unique skate decks. You will laminate a longboard deck from simple weights, and a street board using a polyurethane vacuum bag system. Then, using basic shop tools, these decks will be custom shaped to the students’ preferences. The workshop will cover making 2 decks and the mold for the pressing.

This one-day skill builder workshop will focus on the basics of turning on a lathe.  You will become familiar with the lathe, be introduced to different turning tools and techniques all while making a few quick spindle projects including a honey dipper and wine stopper.  This workshop will serve as a great introduction to turning and is open to all skill levels.  All materials will be provided.

This workshop uses plywood as a modern material to introduce the use of standard shop tools. This includes gaining an understanding of wood veneer as a material, and techniques to use plywood properly. You will learn various construction methods for simple nesting boxes and applying finish. Those skills will then be expanded on creating a custom box for a small personal item.
