Fonda, Howard

For Portland-based painter, Howard Fonda, the notions of form and content intertwine; abstraction, representation, and pattern are all strategies in his toolbox, and very often all appear in a single painting. His works challenge viewers, intuitively warping pictorial space and the figures of his portraits. Drawing from philosophy, mythological narratives, and world history, Fonda’s paintings require of their viewers a high level of attention, and deep contemplation. The discovery of meaning is vital for Fonda, but these meanings are not found simply through putting puzzle pieces together or by following clues or maps; these meanings are transcendental ones, personal and introspective.
